Cavan Baptist Church started as an evangelical fellowship meeting in a farmhouse near Killeshandra, when over 40 people turned up on the very first day – Sunday 22nd March 1992! Ian Grant, who was pastor of Mullaghmeen Baptist Church in Co. Fermanagh, facilitated the meetings. Prior to this the people who came together to form the church had met in various locations for Bible studies and fellowship.
In March 1993 we constituted as a Church and began to meet in the Farnham Arms Hotel in Cavan Town. Ian Grant was called to be the full time pastor in Cavan and he and his wife Judith moved to take up the work in September 1995. We then built and opened a new building just off the Dublin Road in Cavan in March 1997. This building was severely vandalised for about five years, so we decided to sell up and re-locate.
At the beginning of May 2002 we bought a house at Corglass, Oldtown, Cavan. We cleared the front garden to create a car park, and moved a Mobile Classroom on site, where we met for the first year while some renovations were carried out on the house. We started adding on a main hall in August 2002 and this was completed and officially opened during our Tenth Anniversary celebrations on 29th March 2003. Ian continued to pastor the church until March 2005 when he left to take up a new role as the Irish director of SIM (Serving In Mission). The officers and members of the church continued to pray and work together for the next 3 years until they called Ivan Watson to be their new pastor. Ivan and his family arrived in September 2008 to commence a new chapter in their lives and in the life of the church.
